I am starting my own company on a shoestring and have to create a web site to be efficient.
Any idea on how I can go about it cheaply and safely?
Can it be something that I grow myself?
Thanks,

Good Day, I am Jacqueline Taylor-Adams, a professional marketing consultant and the business owner of TaylorAdams Communications - www.tayloradams.biz.
I counsel small business start-ups to begin their web presence with a website that is inexpensive, extremely user-friendly, and easily accessible 24/7.
It will take you 6 months to a year to learn how to market your business on the internet, but also to be clear as to how you want to market yourself. You do not need to pay thousands of dollars for this learning process.
Experience a free trial 10 day trial with WebBizBuilder or WebMaxStudio (you choose the one you like best) :

Re: Creating your own website
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 8:59 PMTo do it for almost free, you need to do a couple of things.
First pick a name for a web site. ! & ! has a domain name checker (see link in next line)
Second, get a web host like 1&1 here- www.1and1.com/ it's cheap at 7 bucks a month or so.
Third, get Joomla, a free content management system (CMS) There are ready made templates (web sites) that you can use to get you started.
You can take care of the first two then google for Joomla while you are waiting for your site to become active. Driving traffic to your site is a whole 'nother issue. :) -

Re: Creating your own website
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 11:57 PMYou will end up leaving 1&1 in a short amount of time. Yes they are cheap, but you get what you pay for. Seen more than a couple of people (who don't know each other) setup and 1&1, get frustrated and leave.
There are many good providers out there, but it really depends on what you need.
Help us out here in terms of requirements... -

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 2:41 AMI left Goddady for 1&1. They aren't any better or worse than any other. They have good uptime and better than average pricing. I have a half dozen sites hosted with them.

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 4:02 AMThanks everyone for the great info!
Is it true that it is very time consuming so start one up?
Also, I am way up in Canada so would 1&1 work for me here? and thanks Jacqueline, but for the same reasons it may be a little hard to keep in touch with you. -

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 4:15 AMThe requirements: this is a small company doing translation and ESL (English as a Second Language where people could read material on second language acquisition and download lesson material to supplement their learning.
The translation part would be simple advertising, I think.

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 7:42 AMYes, 1&1 will work. Yes, doing a site for the first time is time consuming. Fortunately, the reason I recommended Joomla is that most all the work is done for you. -

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 11:12 AMI have a low-speed Canadian country system operated by Beavers all working on shifts (joking of course) and I just found out that the local phone company who usually provides free space, won't because this is low speed.
Does having low-speed Internet impacts how my Web page could be created or is it irrelevant? -

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 11:49 AMYour web site is hosted on high speed servers so the only hit you will take is initally uploading files to the server. Once the site is uploaded, you will be just like any other web site because the files come from the server not from your local machine.. -

Re: Creating your own website
Fri, August 4, 2006 - 12:18 PMThanks blue lobster,
We are a mixture of slow and fast speed Internet locally though being end of line, I do not know when I will go high speed, if ever. Will that first hit that I will take to initially upload files to the server be enough to discourage potential customers?
Should that factor influence the size of my files to server? -

No, because all your visitors ever do is get files from the server. Take Tribe for instance. The devs upload files to the server from whatever local computer they created the files on, then all the visitors to tribe do is access the server through the web browser.
Should that factor influence the size of my files to server?
The web site needs to be what it needs to be, no matter how long it takes to upload on dialup. :)

Re: Creating your own website
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 11:06 PMI host mine at Go Daddy- which is great- but it was built with a program you can buy online called Freeway Express. If you know how to use Photoshop you can then build your own site with it. Program I think is around $100. Feel free to take a look at mine at www.alexandrasaperstein.com . the thing with it is though that you can't do all that stuff with it that generates traffic for searches and all that. I think its called "optimization." I'm clueless with that stuff but feel free to email me with more questions! I also can direct you to my friend who knows all about that stuff! But Freeway Express is great, and on a sidenote, Vista Print is awesome for anything you need to print. I placed a business order and had the full color materials even though they are in MI and I'm in Portland! good luck to you!
